Frequently Asked Questions:
ANSWERS:
1. I don't know what you mean by PDF files and Adobe Reader downloads.
>> PDF stands for "Portable Document Format". Many documents created using specific proprietary software may not be readable unless you own that same software. When converted to PDF, a document is also protected from changes, so you are assured you are reading an accurate document as provided to you. Now about that download:
>> Adobe Reader is a FREE open source program which everyone with a computer is entitled to use. If you need it, you may simply link to Adobe's company website and download the reader. Once installed on your computer, you will be able to read any PDF files you encounter. You won't have to download it again. Then browse away!
>> We have provided links to the Adobe download site at several of our pages. When you click on those links, you will be taken outside of the Magnolias site, to Adobe. Once there, just click on the download Icon that says "Get Adobe Reader" and download.
The Adobe Reader Icon should look something like this:
2. I have trouble reading some of the web pages; can I make the print larger?
>> Yes. There are several ways to do it. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser, the simplest is for you to use the "zoom levels" button on the bottom right corner of your browser.
(Click here and I will show you a picture to help you find it; then just use the BACK button on the top left of the browser menu to return to this page. The picture will direct you to the location of the BACK button also.)
3. I made the print larger, and now some of the links don't seem to work.
>> Darn that Bill Gates! ... We haven't found it documented anywhere, but when you use the zoom feature, it seems to confuse the mouse's cursor positioning, shifting it a little to the left and right, and when you click a link, you get the one next to it by mistake... So, now that you know WHY it happened when you are zoomed in to magnify, you can trick the cursor and move it to a position that will work. Here's the secret: before you click the link, take a look at the browser status bar (bottom of your screen, just above the taskbar), and you will notice the link's address appears. Move your mouse around that area until you see the address text appear. (On our site, you should find the address name is similar to the link on your screen). If the address you see looks like the wrong link, move the cursor a little and watch the address change. When you see the right name, then click.
4. Why can't I see the "residents only" section of the website?
>> If you are a resident,
you must first stop by the management office to obtain the login and password.
>> If you are NOT a resident,
then you will not be able to see the restricted areas, which may contain private association information. Please feel free to browse the public portions of our site.
5. I am a resident, and enjoy using the website, but some of my neighbors would like to see it, and don't own computers; where can they use one?
>> We're glad you like the site. Please tell your neighbors that the clubhouse library has several computers with free internet access. They may also use free computers at any public library or visit a nice neighbor or family member who is willing to let them use their computer. We have also prepared a 'getting started' guide, which is available in the management office, along with the password. Please tell them to pick one up before they visit an available computer.
6. As a resident, why do I need a website?
>>Everyone receives information in a preferred mode. Our communications committee is charged with delivering news and information through as many channels as practical, to reach as many homeowners as possible. Whatever your preference, the website allows you to retrieve information over the internet in the privacy of your home, or when away, 24 hours a day, even when you do not have access to the management office or your own printed condominium documents. The public areas of the site also allow prospective buyers to see what our community is like, improving your visibility if you are selling your home, and allows you easy links to community information.
7. You showed me how to make the print larger on a webpage, but what about a PDF file that I am viewing?
>>Sorry for any confusion. When we showed you earlier how to enlarge the font on a web page, that was only for true "web pages". Sometimes when we link you to a PDF file, the file is not always defaulted to an optimal magnification. The Adobe reader is be invoked automatically by the web browser, and contains additional menu options for viewing PDF files. One of those options is a magnification factor, which you can change to pre-selected values by using the dropdown box, or type in the magnification factor to which you would like to zoom. You can make it smaller to zoom out and see whole pages more easily, or larger to zoom in to larger print. Click here for an example on how it works.
8. How do I rotate a PDF file that is displayed lying on its side?
>> We have done our best to provide you files that are properly oriented. If you link to a file on our site that looks like it should be rotated 90 degrees, please let us know and we will be happy to make the correction. Meanwhile, you don't have to turn your head to the side; you can rotate the image to a viewable angle, using the view menu options in your browser. Click here for an example, showing you the menu selections for rotated viewing.
9. Why isn't our website "Flashy"?
>> We put a lot of thought into a look and feel that would be easily and predictably recognizable when you are visiting the Magnloias site, and wanted it to be simple to use. Some websites use blinking or scrolling text, which can be difficult to read at best, and is not considered good practice. We have elected to make our site easier on the user's eyes by staying within a limited color palette, reserving highlighted text to alert our readers to changes or important notices, and trying to be sensitive to visually impaired readers. Please let us know if you have a specific concern.
10. I am a resident; how is our user ID and login selected?
>> We had several options for setting up your login and password. The method selected provides private access to restricted pages not available to the general public, protecting your privacy while meeting the demographic needs of our community.
11. Do you allow advertisements on your site?
>> No; our policy guidance prohibits advertising in our newsletter or our website. Our residents have access, through the management office, to several bulletin boards within our buildings, should they wish to offer items for sale. Commercial advertisements, though potentially revenue-producing, also present many challenges beyond the policy restrictions in place at this time.
